I do not recommend this card to any college students looking for a card. TL DR in order to qualify for Chase’s “student” line of cards, you need to have a lot of history, something that a student rarely does. They made it as difficult as possible for a student to get this card. How is someone like me supposed to do that? Do they expect me to build credit in high school? Do they expect me to open up a “junky” card which will have to follow me around on my report? I demonstrated I had more than enough income to pay the minimum limit each month. I find it rather surprising and frustrating that in order to qualify for a card designed specifically for people with little or no history, I must have an extensive enough history. They wanted me to have an “extensive history of repayments” and my student loan (which is deferred, so my payments don’t have to be reported) wasn’t enough. I spent hours on the phone speaking with representatives and a rather un-empathetic supervisor who explained to me that the Freedom Student line was “just like any other Freedom card” and that “just because it’s a student card doesn’t mean that students can get it.” So much for that. I forwarded them the necessary documents and waited.įlash forward to today where I found out by mail that I was rejected again on the basis that I had not enough credit history. I called the reconsideration line per instruction from the banker where I learned that I was declined on the basis of income, and to be approved I simply had to verify that I was making what I said I was. After applying, I was notified that I was declined. It was a little more involved, as she had to explain what credit is, how you pay it off, how it affects your score, etc. To apply, I had to meet with a Chase representative at my local branch, who explained to me that this card is designed for college students with little to no history in order to build that history. I decided on the Chase Freedom Student card as opposed to some of the other cards typically marketed towards college students as it is a Visa card and backed by a reputable bank known for their Freedom and Sapphire line.
